Flights to Geneva

I booked one of the Flighys to Geneva not knowing what I’d find. People said it was pricey and boring just suits and handshakes. But they were so wrong. Geneva was full of life, great views, kind people, and a calm charm I didn’t expect.

London City

That Fountain Though...

First morning in Geneva, barely awake and caffeine deprived, I accidentally wandered straight into a postcard aka the Jet d’Eau. I’d seen photos, sure, but nothing prepares you for this 140 meter high fountain just casually blasting into the sky. Total “wait, is this real?” moment. Locals jogged by like it was no big deal, while I stood there fully mesmerized, catching tiny rainbows in the spray and trying not to look too much like a tourist. Spoiler: I failed.

Went back that evening (yes, I was obsessed) and saw it lit up against the dark sky, with the Alps glowing in the distance. Geneva doesn’t show off often, but when it does? It’s unforgettable.

Feeling Small at the UN

Almost skipped the UN tour because I thought it’d be boring. But standing in the halls where world leaders make history gave me chills. The guide’s stories made it all feel real, and sitting in the Assembly Hall hit hardest. Felt the weight of global decisions and left feeling small, but inspired.

Best Meal Ever (No Joke)

Geneva’s pricey, sure but I lucked out in Carouge, the city’s artsy, Mediterranean feeling quarter. Found “Chez Ma Cousine,” a no frills roasted chicken spot with food so good I’m still dreaming about it. Ended up sharing wine and stories with an elderly local who gave me a crash course in Geneva history and hospitality. Turns out the city’s warmth hides in unexpected corners.

Chocolate Overload (In the Best Way)

Had to do the chocolate thing. It's Switzerland, after all. Stumbled on Confiserie du Rhône, a family run shop since 1875, where the owner was hand making truffles and letting me watch (and sample). Their “Pavés de Genève” dark chocolate with honey and hazelnuts were unreal. Pretty sure I bought enough to open a shop back home.

5 AM Magic

Jet lag had me up ridiculously early on my last morning, but it turned out to be magic. The lake was still, the city silent, and the Alps glowing in the first light.
I watched the sunrise turn Lake Geneva gold, a few rowers gliding by, the city slowly waking up. Sat by the Flower Clock, just taking it all in. One of those perfect, unplanned moments that stays with you.

Getting Lost in History

The Old Town caught me off guard. I don't usually go for cathedral tower climbs, but the view from St. Pierre was absolutely worth the 157 steps Geneva spread out between lake and mountains like a postcard. And underneath? An entire archaeological site with layers of Roman and medieval history. Walking through it, I realized just how long this place has been a meeting point of cultures.

Perfect Last Day

On my last day, I just needed to slow down so I spent it at Parc La Grange. Right by the lake, with 12,000 rose bushes in full bloom, the place smelled like summer. I wandered, read, watched families picnic and kids play. It was quiet, local, real. That evening, a free concert filled the park’s amphitheater. Music drifted through the air as the sun set behind the Alps. No grand finale, just a perfect, gentle goodbye.

The Real Geneva

Here’s what surprised me about Geneva: beneath the polished diplomacy and global conferences, the city has a real soul. I heard a dozen languages on a single walk, found incredible food tucked into quiet corners, and met locals who were warmer than their reputation.
It’s this rare mix serious about world affairs but surrounded by natural beauty. You could attend a UN session in the morning and be hiking alpine trails by afternoon. Geneva doesn’t just host the world, it quietly shows how to live in it.

Real Talk: Some Tips

If you're thinking of going, here's what I learned:

  • Get that free Geneva Transport Card from your hotel – public transport adds up fast

  • Yes, it's expensive, but there are ways around it. Pack picnic lunches, look for free events, take advantage of free museum days

  • Just wander. Some of my best discoveries happened when I wasn't following any plan

  • Talk to locals. Seriously. They're proud of their city and love sharing recommendations

Why It Stuck With Me

I took one of the cheap Flighys to Geneva and didn’t expect much. But the city gave me more than a pretty lake and tasty chocolate. It felt big, with so many ideas, people, and stories all in one place. I left with sweet memories, misty mornings, rich truffles, deep talks, and a touch of history. Geneva surprised me in the best way. I’m already thinking about going back. Thanks, Geneva, for being more than I ever thought you’d be.
